As a jewelry designer, especially as a beginner, we can get caught up in what I call the bead on a string syndrome. This is when your designs become slightly repetitive by stringing beads and findings to create variations of the same types of designs. So how do you break out of this habit and become a jewelry designer with pieces that are original, unique and set you apart from the rest? Familiarize yourself with fashion magazines and know the up and coming fashion designers, trends and seasonal colors. Looking through celebrity magazines as well as websites devoted to fashion and style will always give you ideas on what’s new and exciting in the fashion industry. Jewelry designs should evolve like fashion. If your designs reflect current trends within the fashion industry, stores and consumers will be more open-minded to purchasing your designs.
Everyone knows, education is an ongoing thing. Take quarterly jewelry making classes, even if you are a veteran jewelry designer. Jewelry making classes can be found in your local learning annex and through online beading groups. This will enable you to get hands on training, learn to work with different tools (soldering iron, craft drills, etc.) and learn new techniques (wire wrapping, metal clay, etc.). Try Silversmithing, a trade that will really set you apart and take your jewelry business to a whole new level.
Stepping out of your usual comfort zone can be intimidating. Study the market, find out what similar jewelry artists are doing, visualize what’s lacking in the market and think of something you are looking for but can’t seem to source. Once you start implementing these strategies, your designs will become more creatively inclined and you will find more doors opening.
I always go back to the jewelry trend of 1999, the power bead bracelet. Although this became a huge fad that fizzled, it made jewelry designer Zoe Metro a multimillionaire and started a jewelry craze. It just goes to show you what thinking out of the box can do.
